The Inspiration
The Flat Stanley Project traces its roots to Jeff Brown's 1964 children's book Flat Stanley, in which a boy named Stanley Lambchop is flattened by a falling bulletin board. Undeterred, Stanley discovers he can be rolled up, tucked into an envelope, and mailed anywhere in the world — turning an accident into an adventure.
In 1995, Canadian teacher Dale Hubert transformed the story into a global classroom tradition. Students created paper "Flat Stanleys," mailed them to friends, relatives, and strangers around the world, and asked each host to take Stanley on local adventures and document the journey in a travel journal. What started as one classroom project grew into a worldwide phenomenon, with millions of students and recipients participating across more than 90 countries.
Post 208 borrows that same spirit. Instead of a paper boy in an envelope, our Mighty MO Travel Trophy makes the journey — traveling with Post 208 members wherever life takes them, photographed at every stop.
